Background

At the Grimaldi Maritime terminal in the Port of Barcelona, some cargo lines transport goods with non-standard or incorrectly declared dimensions. These errors lead to mistakes in ferry interior storage planning and revenue loss due to under-declared cargo. In conclusion, the lack of automation and control points hinders traceability.

This project emerges as a new use case following the Clever-Sense Residus project, funded by Puertos del Estado under Ports 4.0, in collaboration with the Port Authority of Barcelona and GoClever.

Description

The project consisted of testing a remote detection and automatic dimension calculation solution for vehicles and cargo at the Grimaldi terminal entrance.

GoClever proposed a system that integrates LIDAR technology (Laser Scanner) for precise real-time measurement, and cloud computing for immediate dimension estimation. The system integrates with existing platforms.

Impact

Economy

  • Improves operational control, allowing payment to be adjusted to the actual transported volume.

People

  • Reduces risk for operators.
  • Eliminates errors associated with manual processes.
  • Improves planning for out-of-gauge cargo.

Conclusions

The system enables precise control of declared vs. actual cargo, improving cargo registration and verification. This automated characterization enhances validation and traceability processes.
